“Through the Nightmares” is a hardcore platformer that requires players to have high skills in character control right from the start. You will play as a character named Sandman, who is trying to save children from Morpheus by traveling through their dreams.
The main mechanic of the game revolves around Sandman’s ability to shrink in size. In full size, the hero jumps better and moves faster, but in a smaller form, he can pass through narrow gaps and indefinitely stand on platforms that crumble under the weight of the “adult” Sandman.
Another interesting mechanic in “Through the Nightmares” is related to checkpoints. In each level, you can find hourglasses and activate them at any convenient location to make them your checkpoint. However, these hourglasses have a limited number of attempts, after which you will have to start the level from the beginning. You can also choose not to use checkpoints and receive a bonus at the end of the level.
In a traditional style for the genre, there is also a secret in each level, which is not so difficult to find, but reaching it on the first or even fifth try may not be easy. One of the pleasant bonuses is that destroyed obstacles remain destroyed in subsequent attempts, which saves you some nerves.
The game is still in beta version, and the developers still have a lot of work to do, but I recommend it to fans of challenging platformers.
